Wireless Campus
Students and employees can reap the benefits of anywhere access to campus network resources and the Internet using a wireless client. Chandler-Gilbert is one of the few campuses anywhere to demonstrate a total commitment to wireless computing. Available since Fall 2002 in various classroom areas with proven success, open access for any faculty, staff, or student is now available and we encourage students to test and evaluate wireless access using their own equipment if desired.
Requirements for wireless access
- Currently enrolled students and employees are authorized to use the campus wireless network.
- Register equipment (one-time only) for wireless access.
- Wireless laptop, handheld computer, PDA, etc. with an 802.11b compatible wireless card.
The Wireless Network/Wireless Registration And Configuration page will walk you through the process of registering and configuring your wireless device for Internet access.
Availability & Services
The CGCC wireless network is available within all buildings at the Pecos, Sun Lakes, and Williams (except the Hangar) campuses. Services such as FTP, email, and Internet access are made available through a wireless connection.
Standards-based wireless
CGCC opted to implement a standards based 802.11b wireless network to maximize wireless coverage, ensure compatibility, and easier access at the expense of performance gains using newer wireless technologies. This approach has simplified the process of certifying various manufacturers wireless equipment like Cisco, 3Com, Apple, and Intel-based wireless products. All of these products have been tested and verified to work on our current wireless network and are good choices for students to consider for their own equipment, although there are specific products. Unlike many organizations who have chosen to limit wireless access due to ongoing security concerns. Chandler-Gilbert has established a wireless campus as an enabling technology to respond to customer demands for convenient network access. Although managing security is vital and will continue to be a concern, the benefits of anywhere access to network resources is worth the risk.
