Placement Testing

Course placement testing is the second step in your educational journey. Placement results allow you and your advisor to determine which courses are best for you as you begin your education at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC). The placement test will determine your skill level in English, reading and math.  The text below answers the most frequently asked questions about the process.

  • Test Instruments:
    • ACCUPLACER & COMPASS are adaptive computer-based tests in an untimed multiple-choice format.
    • ALEKS is an untimed computer-adaptive test for math.
    • ASSET is a timed paper-pencil test in a multiple-choice format.
    • CELSA, used for placement into English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, is a timed multiple-choice format either on pencil-paper or computer.

Not all instruments or formats are available at all campuses. Testing hours may vary. Check with the Testing Center at the campus of your choice. Chandler-Gilbert Community College utilizes ACCUPLACER as their primary placement instrument.

Block Placement Testing Instructions English, math and reading:

    • Please review placement calendar for test times, sessions vary monthly
    • Student must set their online student account.  Go to my.maricopa.edu and click on "First Time Users Start Here."  Follow instructions provided to obtain your Maricopa Enterprise ID (MEID).  Password, and Student ID.  To apply for admissions go to my.maricopa.edu, then click Login and enter your User ID (MEID) and password.  Next click on Sign in and go to MCCCD Admissions under Student Center and complete your personal information.
    • Placement testing is by appointment only.
    • Students must arrive at their designated test time.
    • There is no cost to students for this service.
    • All testers ARE REQUIRED to present valid and current picture identification before testing.
    • Don't forget your 8-digit student ID number, MEID & password.

Single Subject Placement Testing:

    • Students may walk-in during our hours of operation.  Please visit the Testing Center web page for hours of operation.
    • Student must set their online student account.  Go to my.maricopa.edu and click on "First Time Users Start Here."  Follow instructions provided to obtain your Maricopa Enterprise ID (MEID).  Password, and Student ID.  To apply for admissions go to my.maricopa.edu, then click Login and enter your User ID (MEID) and password.  Next click on Sign in and go to MCCCD Admissions under Student Center and complete your personal information.

 CELSA (English as a Second Language Test)

CELSA Placement Testing is available for students for which English is their second language. It assists us in determining the appropriate English as a Second Language (ESL) course a student may need. Seating is limited.

  • Test sessions available on a walk-in basis during normal business hours. Please visit www.cgc.edu/testing for current hours of operation and last check-in times.  Student must set their online student account.  Go to my.maricopa.edu and click on "First Time Users Start Here."  Follow instructions provided to obtain your Maricopa Enterprise ID (MEID).  Password, and Student ID.  To apply for admissions go to my.maricopa.edu, then click Login and enter your User ID (MEID) and password.  Next click on Sign in and go to MCCCD Admissions under Student Center and complete your personal information.
  • Seating is limited, please plan accordingly.
  • There is no cost to students for this service.
  • CELSA assessments may only be repeated one time.
  • All testers ARE REQUIRED to present valid and current picture identification before testing.
  • Don't forget your 8-digit student ID number, MEID & password.


Classroom Support Testing

(Make-up exams, online courses, and disability-related special accommodations)

All make-up exams and on-line course testing is coordinated by the instructor with the Testing Center. Students should contact their instructors to ensure that arrangements have been made prior to arriving at the Testing Center.

  • All testers ARE REQUIRED to present valid and current picture identification before testing.
  • Don't forget your 8-digit student ID number.
  • Please provide the class (i.e. MAT121) and instructor (Jane Smith).
  • Tests and instructions must be submitted by instructors prior to taking the test at the Center.
  • Students are responsible for providing their own scantron form, calculators, or any other item allowed by instructor.
  • If your test requires the use of a computer, you may walk-in during our hours of operation at the Pecos campus, however, computers are limited or to schedule an appointment at the Williams campus call (480) 988-8000, students are encouraged to schedule their appointments at least 1 - 2 weeks in advance to ensure availability.
  • The Testing Center does not accept or distribute homework assignments.

Instructors: Please visit the Make-up Testing Request page for information on submitting tests and instructions to Testing services. Note: If you have a student with special needs and they are not registered in the Disability Resources and Services Office please contact (480) 857-5188.

Make-up Exams and Online Course Testing:

  • Services extended only for students who may have missed an exam due to extenuating circumstances such as death in family, illness, etc. or who are taking a hybrid or online course.
  • Please visit www.cgc.edu/testing for current hours of operation and last check-in times.
  • Limited Saturday testing available (by appointment only) during the rest of the academic year. An appointment can be made by calling (480) 732-7159. No email requests will be accepted.
  • Saturday appointments must be made by 12 noon on the Thursday before a test is being requested but it would help the center staff if you would make arrangements at least 1 - 2 weeks in advance whenever possible so we can plan for appropriate staffing.

Disability Related Test Accommodations:

  • Students needing ADA special accommodations for testing must be registered with Disability Resources Services (DRS) office prior to testing.
  • Testing for ADA special accommodations will be coordinated through the DRS office prior to the test. Current documentation must be on file in the Testing Center.
  • Students must make an appointment for special accommodations testing. Students are encouraged to schedule their appointments at least 1 - 2 weeks in advance.
  • Testing hours will be determined based on the student’s special accommodation needs.
  • All testers ARE REQUIRED to present valid and current picture identification before testing.


 

HESI A2

Evolve REACH Admission Assessment Exam for Nursing
Nursing Entrance Exam

The Evolve Reach (HESI) Admission Assessment Exam (A2) is a computer based test consisting of seven mondules:  Math Skills, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary & General Knowledge, Grammar, Learning Style, Personaility Style, and Critical Thinking.  The Science modules in Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology,and Physics will NOT be administered or used for admission to the MCCCD Nursing Programs.
  • As of January 1, 2012 NEW Cost: $37.00 (NO REFUNDS and cost is subject to change)
  • Photo ID required
  • 8-digit Maricopa ID number required for testing

  • Average time to complete test is 3.5 hours, please plan accordingly 
  • You may walk-in during our hours of operation (see home page), last check-in times for HESI A2 are:
  • Monday - Thursday 3:00pm (last check-in time)
    Friday Closed
    No HESI A2 test will be started after the last check-in times

    Proctoring Services

    The Testing Center at Chandler-Gilbert Community College offers exam administration and proctoring services to members of our community. We are able to accommodate paper and pencil exams, exams that must be word-processed using MS Word on a PC, and Internet testing. Exams are given in a classroom or lab with other testing conducted at the same time. Individual testing rooms are not available. Any fees not covered by the originating institution will be charged to the examinee.

    • Specific proctors cannot be requested or assigned. Exams will be administered by any Assessment/Testing staff member on duty at the time the test is taken.     • Exams will be administered in the Assessment/Testing Center facility that is monitored by proctors.
    • Internet or computer based tests can be administered but additional software cannot be installed. MS Internet Explorer, MS Office is available.
    • Appointments are required for all proctored exams (at least one week in advanced).
    • Please notify the staff if exam(s) require special administration such as audio tape or CD player, computer based, etc. (Note: Students must provide their own authorized supplies: CD player, headphones, rulers, scantrons etc.)
    • Complete instructions for the proctor must be provided in writing and must accompany the exam. Procedures conveyed by the examinee will not be accepted.
    • Exams must be administered in one session either timed or untimed. Proctor will record beginning and end time but will not time subsections of the exam.
    • Proctors will not collect additional materials from examinee or give additional materials to examinee, such as take-home tests, homework, projects, papers, registration forms, etc.
    • All necessary test materials are to be supplied by the originating institution and must accompany the exam. This includes examinee information sheets, answer sheets, return envelopes, etc. If a prepaid return envelope is not provided, postage will be charged.
    • The student or institution must prepay for courier or overnight return services and provided all necessary supplies. Please plan accordingly!
    • Faxed tests will not be accepted
    • Copies of completed tests will not be kept on file.  

    Guidelines for examinees:

    • It is the responsibility of the examinee to contact the originating school or institution to order tests, to make sure that the test materials have arrived prior to the test date, and to follow up on any instructions requiring clarification.
    • Current photo ID issued by school, city/state/federal government is required (ID without photo or issued by companies such as banks or gyms, check cashing or membership cards, etc. are not accepted.)
    • Examinee is required to create a student account through my.maricopa.edu. A student I.D. will be issued and utilized for payment purposes.
    • There is a $15.00 per hour proctoring fee. Fees not paid by the institution must be paid on the day of service by the examinee. At the end of the exam session an invoice will printed for payment at the cashier’s office. Fees may be paid by cash, check, or money order (payable to CGCC) or credit/debit card.
    • Allow extra time for checking in and out, paying any fees and completing any necessary paperwork required by your school or institution. Exams will be collected promptly at the close of business. If the exam is to be copied or faxed or any other processing is required, the exam will be collected prior to the close of business to allow time for these activities. Staff are not permitted to remain after hours to accomplish these tasks. PLEASE ALLOW YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME!
