Sun Lakes Center Welcome to the Sun Lakes Center, an extended campus of Chandler-Gilbert Community College, serving the populations of the greater Sun Lakes community, including SunBird, Ocotillo, Springfield, and extended areas. Mission: To provide opportunity for connections to resources, education, and services to the mature population of the Southeast Valley. Purpose: The SLC's primary purpose is to serve the credit and noncredit needs of mature adults. Credit and noncredit classes will be designed to be conducive for mature adults' physical needs, i.e.; length of seat time, etc. The Center will provide registration and all other student services. The Center will utilize state-of-the-art communications systems. The facility will serve as an extended campus of Chandler-Gilbert Community College. History: - Passage of the GO Bond in November, 1994, provided $500,000 for the development and construction of a 5,000 gsf education center in the Sun Lakes/SunBird Communities area, thus serving the population of the Southeast Valley.
- Advisory Board formed February, 1995.
- Preliminary programming (noncredit classes) began September, 1995.
- The Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board approved the conceptual development of the SLEC on November 28, 1995.
- Partnered with Chandler Regional Hospital for the development of the Sun Lakes Health Center complex which includes the SLEC in the Spring of 1996.
- Sign unveiling on designated property, February 23, 1996.
- Ground Breaking Ceremony, May 8, 1996.
- Construction began Fall, 1996.
- Dedication of facility, May 10, 1997.
- On-site programming began Fall, 1997.
- Introduction of Institute for Learning in Retirement - New Adventures in Learning for Seniors (NAILS), Fall 1998.
- New Adventures in Learning Program began, January, 1999.
- Passage of GO Bond provided $2 million funding for expansion of project for Center of an additional 6,000 gsf., November, 2004.
- Introduction of Chandler "Boomerang", Fall, 2005.
- Construction began April 7, 2006, with expansion completion in November, 2006.
- Name Revision, August, 2006.
- Ten Year Anniversary Celebration and Grand re-dedication Ceremony scheduled for late April, 2007.
