PTK Satellite Series - “Pathways out of Poverty through Green Collar Jobs"
Chandler-Gilbert Community College's Phi Theta Kappa organization, as part of its fall 2008 Satellite Series, will host, “Pathways out of Poverty through Green Collar Jobs: The Role of Scholarship in Improving Quality of Life for Urban Residents” via a live satellite feed on Tuesday, October 7 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in room C110 on CGCC’s Pecos Campus.
Dr. Raquel Pinderhughes, Professor of Urban Studies at San Francisco State University, will be featured in this seminar, which will focus on green-collar jobs and how they represent an important category of work force opportunities for low-income adults with barriers to employment, such as not having a GED or high school degree, limited labor market skills, and/or being incarcerated. Pinderhughes will also illuminate the role scholars can have in both social change and the direct improvement in the quality of life for these individuals.
Pinderhughes’ teaching, research, and community activism focus on improving quality of life for people living and working in cities. Her landmark study, "Green Collar Jobs: An Analysis of the Capacity of Green Business to Provide High Quality Jobs for Men and Women with Barriers to Employment," is considered the definitive work on the subject and has been used as a model for various programs.
This event is free and open to the public.
