Chandler-Gilbert Community College Teal & Silver Awards 2004

Chandler-Gilbert Community College collaborates with community and school partners to serve our students and we rely on community support to achieve our goals. It is appropriate to recognize the contributions of our colleagues, partners, supporters, alumni, and community leaders in the success of our students.

The Chandler-Gilbert Community College Teal and Silver Awards Program was created to recognize the contributions of individuals who support CGCC students, employees, programs, services, and the college community.

These individuals positively impact the college by assisting with program or service improvements, supporting creative and innovative ideas, improving the quality of the college experience, supporting the delivery of instruction, providing resources or assisting with cost-saving measures, and advocating for the college in the media, with elected officials, and in the community.

Charles E. Backus - University Colleague

Charles Backus, founding Provost of ASU East and an East Valley community leader, has been a staunch supporter in the continuing development of the Williams Campus. Chuck was instrumental in initiating the Partnership in Baccalaureate Education between Chandler-Gilbert Community College and ASU East, which draws on the strengths of both institutions in delivering quality academic programs to students at the Williams Campus.

A long-standing member of the CGCC President's Community Advisory Council, Chuck has donated his time to helping with long-range college planning. In his role as Vice President of ASU and Provost of ASU East, he regularly provides advice and counsel to President Hesse and other community college officials on university relations.

Lionel Diaz - Community College Colleague

Lionel Diaz, is currently the Executive Assistant to Chancellor Rufus Glasper of the Maricopa Community Colleges, but for more than fifteen years he served as the Director of Facilities Planning and Development for the Maricopa Community Colleges. During that period of time, with his help, Chandler-Gilbert Community College significantly expanded its Pecos Campus and opened two new locations, the Williams Campus and the Sun Lakes Education Center.

His quiet ongoing service is noticeable to college employees who characterize him as "collegial and cooperative," and willing to go the extra mile to provide support and assistance.

Arlen Solochek - Community College Colleague

Arlen Solochek is now the Director of Facilities Planning and Development for the Maricopa Community Colleges and was formerly a manager in the same department. His responsibilities span all ten of the Maricopa Colleges, but his attention to the projects at Chandler-Gilbert Community College during the past decade helped the college grow from a dream to a reality.

Arlen provides oversight for selection of architects and construction firms, and is the liaison for the land conveyance from the Department of Education at the Williams Campus. In addition to recent construction projects, many of which have won design awards, Arlen provides ongoing advice and support to college facilities personnel with major maintenance projects including roadways, signage, landscaping, utilities, and energy conservation.

Melinda Romero - K-12 Colleague

Melinda Romero, Executive Director, Staff Development and Instructional Services for the Chandler Unified School District, has collaborated with both the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Service Learning and Education programs for many years and is responsible for initiating the college's most successful and streamlined model for placing students.

Melinda has worked diligently with both education faculty and students in securing placements in which students can apply course content and collaborate with experienced mentor teachers. Her partnership with CGCC has had significant impact on the ability of CGCC students to apply core concepts and course curriculum to real-life settings and to gain insight into educational issues.

Rob Gililland - Technology Partner

Rob Gililland is an account manager for CCS Presentation Systems and has been the liaison between Chandler-Gilbert Community College and CCS for the past two years.

In his role as account manager, Rob has been instrumental in helping to make technology pervasive in CGCC classrooms, by arranging installations without disruption to class activities. In addition to ensuring highly professional work standards, Rob identified CGCC's eligibility for the NEC Smartkids Grant that has enabled the college to receive upwards of $20,000 in cost savings over the last two years.

Sheryl Srna - Business & Industry Partner

Sheryl Srna, Arizona Workforce Development/Campus Recruiting Manager for Intel, is a long-standing supporter of Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and has been committed to the success of its Automated Manufacturing Systems (AMS) program for many years.

In addition to serving on the program advisory council, Sheryl has been a strong advocate in securing equipment donations and scholarship funding, facilitating internships, and providing recruitment assistance for the college. She volunteers a considerable amount of time to support the summer Chip Camp program held at the Williams Campus.

Sandy Phillippi - Community Organization Partner

Sandy Phillippi, Director of the Gilbert Senior Center, has worked with Chandler-Gilbert Community College for the past several years helping to ensure that CGCC students have the opportunity to serve their community in a variety of forums.

For the past three years, Sandy has worked with the CGCC Student Life Office in providing opportunities for students to visit with seniors during our major community service event, Into the Streets. Sandy was also key to the success of this semester's Generations Prom, securing the facility and arranging transportation for the seniors.

Harley Christian, Otto and Edna Neely Foundation - Scholarship Donor

Harley Christian serves as the manager of the Otto and Edna Neely Foundation which has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship support to Chandler-Gilbert Community College students over the last six years.

Although Harley insists that he is only an emissary for Otto and Edna Neely, who he says are the "true heroes," Harley has been immensely helpful in working directly with the college financial aid office over the years.

Celia Flores - Alumni

Celia Flores immigrated to the United States and began taking classes at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in 1989. Through the English as a Second Language program, she learned to speak, read, and write English.

With the assistance of CGCC staff, Celia validated teacher education credentials she had earned in Mexico. She is currently a teacher at the Longfellow Elementary School in Mesa where she has taught first grade for eight years. A friend at the school says that she is known for her translation skills as well being a "super teacher and a gracious person."

Nachie Marquez - Community Leader

Since her tenure began as the Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the City of Chandler, Nachie Marquez has been raising Chandler-Gilbert Community College's profile with City of Chandler residents.

Nachie has included CGCC in partnership opportunities for a variety of events, including the city's annual Mariachi Festival, Mano y Mano, and the Hispanic Film Festival. These outreach efforts in the Hispanic community are crucial in raising awareness of the importance of achieving a college education.

Jerry Brooks - Advisory Council Member

College prior to its beginnings in 1985. Jerry was also a founding member of the President's Community Advisory Council, a group of community leaders that shape strategic directions for the college, and he has served on that group for more than a decade.

His advocacy for the college, particularly during the early and difficult years of development, was unparalleled.

Mark Killian - Advisory Council Member

Mark Killian served as an elected official in the Arizona House of Representatives for 14 years where he served in the positions of Majority Leader and Speaker of the House. During that time, Mark supported Chandler-Gilbert Community College and the entire community college system.

As a legislator, Mark consistently advocated for funding and opposed budget cuts for community colleges. President Emeritus of CGCC, Arnette Ward, said that Mark's advocacy efforts on behalf of community colleges were both "noble and noticeable" and made a strong statement about the value of community colleges in our local communities.
