Frank Wilson Receives "Texty" Award

CGCC mathematics faculty Frank Wilson received the 2007 "Texty" Textbook Excellence Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA) on June 22, 2007 for his text, "Finite Mathematics and Applied Calculus."

Text and Academic Authors created the Textbook Excellence Award in 1992 to recognize current textbooks and learning materials. To be nominated, a work must carry a copyright date for the previous or current year. TAA designed the award, called the Texty, because text materials did not have awards of their own.

Pushpa Ramakrishna Receives MCCCD Foundation Award

April 21, 2007

Congratulations to biology faculty Pushpa Ramakrishna, recipient of the Maricopa Foundation's Outstanding Employee award for 2006-2007.

The Maricopa Colleges Foundation sponsors an annual program to recognize employees within the Maricopa County Community College District who have made outstanding contributions to advance the mission of the District. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded in the recipient's name to a Maricopa County Community College student.

Persons are nominated by members of the Maricopa family and selected by a committee of Foundation board members. Pushpa was nominated by CGCC President Dr. Maria Hesse and English and Humanities faculty Marybeth Mason.

CGCC Receives NCIA Award

April 20, 2007

The National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) announced in December that Chandler-Gilbert Community College was the winner of the "Assessment of Student Learning" category for the CGCC "ePortfolio Project" in the NCIA's 18th annual Exemplary Initiatives Competition.

NCIA is a professional organization affiliated with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The awards recognize outstanding ways to enhance the quality of higher education provided at the two-year institutions in the United States.

Each year, community colleges submit a variety of “Best Practices” that correspond to annual award categories. This year, the 18th for the Exemplary Initiatives Awards competition, NCIA officials solicited entries in six broad areas: Student Retention and Success, Curriculum Innovation, Organizational Change, Assessment of Student Learning, Workforce Development, and Responding to Community Needs.

CGCC Teacher Education Program Receives National Award

March 24, 2007

Chandler-Gilbert Community College was one of five exceptional community colleges honored by Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges, at the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana this month.

CGCC was recognized as having one of the top five pre-service teacher education programs in the nation. The 2007 Phi Theta Kappa Teacher Preparation Program Awards recognize the colleges' exemplary efforts to prepare students for careers in education. The teacher preparation programs selected as exemplary programs were honored for best demonstrating the values of leadership, service, scholarship, and professional development.

Education faculty Sharon Fagan, Jennifer Peterson and Brenda Larson, along with education student Carrie Seather accepted the award at the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs in March.

myCGC Portal named MCCCD Innovation of the Year 2006-2007

Congratulations to MCCCD Innovation of the Year 2006-2007 award winners, Audree Thurman, Enterprise Application Designer; Ryan Cain, Coordinator of Student Services (Advisement); Ron Slamka, Programmer/Analyst II; Brien Dieterle, Systems Administrator II; Michael Berry, Programmer/Analyst III; and Dawn Vucetich, Director of College Student Services.

The myCGC Portal is a one-stop-shop entryway to the web for CGCC students, faculty and staff, which allows them to access a multitude of resources online, including academic check sheets, teacher evaluations, electronic portfolios, class rosters, class schedules, athletic grade checks, academic and career planning tools, a calendar of events, and much more. This tool has created an interactive network where students, faculty, and staff can work together to plan for students' persistence and success.

The MCCCD Innovation of the Year award recipient receives the Paul M. Pair Award. This award is named in memory and in honor of Dr. Paul M. Pair, long-time member and former president of the Maricopa Colleges Foundation Board. The award includes $2,000 to be used to further the winning innovation.

CGCC Students Take Top Honors in MCCCD Music Competition

March 19, 2007

Congratulations to CGCC students Jason A. Gartner and Bryant Fuhrmann who recently took home top honors in the 2006-2007 Maricopa Community College District Music Competition (Composition Category).

Gartner took first place for "Homage to Great Guitarists" and Fuhrmann took third place for "Lost Faith."

WLG Honors Yvette Strickling

March 14, 2007

Congratulations to Yvette Strickling who was honored with the Women's Leadership Group 2007 "Woman of Distinction" Distinguished Achievement Award, which will be presented to her at the group's 9th Annual Women's Leadership Luncheon in April.

Yvette was nominated by Vice President of Student Affairs Lois Bartholomew.

Some excerpts from her nomination included:

  • "Yvette is one of the most creative women I have had the privilege of working with her at CGCC. She has been responsible for numerous events at CGCC for both the community and students. Some of the events she has helped "create" are graduation, student recognition and awards, and numerous special events. Yvette is often called upon to help others create special events and programs because she has a great talent with program design and implementation."
  • Yvette is a wonderful example of success within the Maricopa Colleges. In the last six years, she has completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees, served in various leadership roles, extended her time and talents to all who seek her support, and served as a mentor to both staff and students, providing experience, leadership, and creativity to all major student affairs projects. She has great strength, integrity and talent, which she fully uses to advance CGCC."
  • "She is an inspiration and a dedicated professional woman with clear personal and professional goals. She is a successful wife and mother, along with all of her many other talents."


Yvette is involved in a number of campus and student-related activities each year, including serving as a mentor to CGCC students throughout the academic year; advisor to the Black Student Union (BSU), helping students prepare for campus jobs and jobs within the club and assisting in helping students sponsor campus events; participating in CGCC's BSU and Student Life and Leadership Panel Discussion in February 2007; Valley of the Sun United Way Chair 2006 for CGCC; and Into the Streets Team site leader.

CGCC Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Receives Five Stars

March 5, 2007

The CGCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently awarded 5-Star status for the January 2006 – January 2007 calendar year. This award reflects students' commitment to the four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship and Service.

The CGCC chapter was also awarded a Platinum In Pinnacle Award for its effort in recruiting new members to the Phi Theta Kappa organization. Additionally, CGCC student and Phi Theta Kappa member Mike O’Brien was elected to serve as a Regional Officer of Phi Theta Kappa.

Jill Grundy Receives MCCCD Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award

March 1, 2007

Congratulations to CGCC adjunct faculty Jill Grundy, who was recently awarded the MCCCD Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award.

For more than 20 semesters, Jill Grundy has taught Business and Personal Computing and Computer Information Systems classes at CGCC. Jill has always been a passionate and dedicated teacher with an excellent attendance record. She conscientiously adheres to all division responsibilities and has willingly substituted for other faculty who have had to miss their classes for an extended illness.

Jill has been the requested instructor by the Principal of the Project Challenge program at CGCC's Williams Campus to teach computer classes for the Project Challenge program for many semesters. She has always been receptive to learning computer software for classroom management purposes, such as Blackboard and SAM. She has investigated other computer applications that may be of interest to students and relevant to her curriculum. She is always very excited and willing to share her knowledge and expertise with her peers and her students.

CGCC Law Enforcement Graduates Set Testing Records

January 18, 2007

Kudos to CGCC Law Enforcement Training Academy students who achieved the highest class average in each of the three testing blocks of all the academy classes tested to date while testing with AzPOST in January 2007 to earn their certification prior to graduation on January 26. In the most difficult testing block (Block 1), a CGCC student achieved the highest test score to date compared with other academies, and in testing Block 3, a CGCC student tied for the highest test score to date.

Congratulations to CGCC Law Enforcement graduates, Academy Coordinator Rich Kush, and academy instructors for assisting students in reaching this outstanding achievement.

Mike Corry Recognized by Intel

December 22, 2006

Congratulations to Mike Corry who was recognized by the Intel Corporation in December 2006 as their Recent Technical Graduate (RTG) Customer Award winner.

Mike was primarily recognized for his contribution in supporting the Intel Corporation "benchmarking" visit held at CGCC in late August. Intel Program Manager Hamilton Shattuck noted that Mike's excellent presentation of the college's Automated Manufacturing Systems program and how it fits into the Intel RTG workforce development roadmap was most impressive to all in attendance.

Pam Davenport and Marybeth Mason Featured Writers in New Book

December 11, 2006

Congratulations to CGCC faculty Pam Davenport and Marybeth Mason, who are featured writers in a new book entitled, "Engaging Departments: Moving Faculty Culture From Private to Public, Individual to Collective Focus for the Common Good."

In a compelling chapter, they share the history of CGCC's English department. The purpose of the book is to provide "concrete examples of departments in which faculty have made the difficult cultural transition from focusing on 'my work' to 'our work.'" Moving stories are told of how departments that have learned to work collaboratively then reach out into communities and learn to build relationships that are mutually beneficial. (Kecskes, 2006, p. xiv).

Carnegie Foundation Recognizes CGCC

December 5, 2006

Chandler-Gilbert Community College was recently selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of 76 U.S. colleges and universities to receive its new Community Engagement Classification. Institutions elected to apply by submitting comprehensive and extensive descriptions and examples of institutionalized practices of community engagement that showed alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices. Those selected were classified in one of three categories:

1. Curricular Engagement: teaching, learning, and scholarship which engages faculty, students and community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration. (5 institutions selected) 2. Outreach and Partnerships: the application and provision of institutional resources for community use with benefits to both campus and community, and collaborative interactions with community and related scholarship for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge, information, and resources (9 institutions selected) 3. Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships includes institutions with substantial commitments in both areas described above. (62 institutions selected)

CGCC is among the 62 institutions and one of only five community colleges receiving distinction in both Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships. A listing of the institutions in the Community Engagement Classification can be found on the Carnegie website.

CGCC's application highlighted its commitment to community engagement in the college's mission, goals and strategic planning. CGCC included information about the following programs and practices and connections to the community: service-learning, community service, civic engagement, continuing education, faculty hiring practices, faculty and staff professional development, global learning, study abroad, executive leadership, budget and infrastructure, career and technical education, community advisory councils, student engagement, faculty scholarship, early outreach, marketing, extension campuses, facilities utilization, cultural offerings, athletics, library services, learning assistance, and technology.

"Finding new and better ways to connect with their communities should be a high priority for higher education institutions today," says Lee S. Shulman, president of the Carnegie Foundation. "The campuses participating in this elective classification provide useful models of engagement around teaching and learning and around research agendas that benefit from collaborative relationships."

Barbara Winckler Honored as Top Nursing Educator

Congratulations to Barbara Winckler, CGCC Director of Nursing, who was honored at the March of Dimes "Nurses of the Year Awards" dinner on November 18 at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa. Barbara was a statewide finalist for the Nurse Educator of the Year Award.

CGCC Receives 10-Year Accreditation

November 10, 2006

After two years of intensive self-study and evaluation, CGCC recently completed the accreditation process, and has been recommended for a 10-year accreditation and continued affiliation with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC/NCA).

The two-part accreditation process included the preparation of a self-study report (self-examination), followed by an evaluation visit (peer-review). The five criteria for evaluation were mission and integrity; preparing for the future; student learning and effective teaching; acquisition, discovery, and application of knowledge; and engagement and service

From November 6-8, a team of six consultant-evaluators, led by team chair Dr. Robert Sorensen, presented the exit report of the team's visit to CGCC.

The report was complimentary of the college; its faculty, staff, and students; and the community. The team discussed the following college strengths: response to the last accreditation report; the culture of assessment of student learning; the faculty development programs; the commitment to student success in programs and services; the capital development plans; interdisciplinary initiatives such as service learning, global engagement, and learning communities; the commitment to civic engagement, community involvement, and responsive workforce development programs; and the Governing Board's commitment to and knowledge of the college.

The team’s recommendations for improvement were around the topics of institutional research; organization and structure for college leadership; informal and formal recognition of all employee groups; and formalization of the partnership with ASU at the Polytechnic Campus. The college received a recommendation for ten years with no focus visits or monitoring reports.

CGCC Volleyball Ranked Number 1 in the Nation by NJCAA

November 1, 2006

The Chandler-Gilbert Community College Volleyball team finished their regular season schedule with a 25-3 overall record and a number 1 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Polls (based on team statistics).

The Coyotes were also crowned the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Champions with an unblemished conference mark of 18-0. The Coyotes finished a remarkable 54-4 in conference games, with KT Creech of Gilbert (Highland High School graduate), Jenna Mailou (Hawaii), and Lindsay Palmer of Mesa (Westwood High School graduate) earning All Conference and All Region first team honors. Freshman Megan Bluth of Gilbert (Highland High School graduate) received honorable mention honors. Creech was also named "Player of the Year" in the ACCAC.

Led by CGCC head volleyball coach Vee Hiapo, the Coyotes went on to capture the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title in the Region 1, Division II Tournament held November 2-4 at the CGCC Williams Campus Gym. CGCC will now advance to the NJCAA tournament, set for November 16-18 at Scottsdale Community College.

Bill Crawford Receives Roy Wilkins Community Service Award

October 17, 2006

Congratulations to CGCC Dean of Career and Technical Education Bill Crawford, who was honored with the East Valley NAACP’s highest honor, the NAACP Roy Wilkins Community Service Award at the East Valley NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner in October.

Bill serves as advisor and mentor to CGCC’s Black Student Union. He is also currently Vice President, Western Region of the Council on Black American Affairs (WRCBAA). The WRCBAA represents more than 400 community and technical colleges in 11 states in the western region of the U.S. In addition, Bill serves as secretary of the Board of Directors for Community Bridges of Arizona, which offers substance abuse treatment and recovery to homeless, indigent and working poor adults. The Community Bridges’ family of community service agencies provides prevention, education and training services. In addition, he serves as a member to the Salvation Army Advisory Board.

CGCC named to the U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

October 10, 2006

Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been named to the U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. An awards ceremony was held on October 17, 2006 at the national Campus Compact meeting in Chicago, at which time many colleges and universities throughout the United States were honored. Of the nation's 1100 community colleges, approximately 50 community colleges among the recipients.

The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Education.

Dietetics Program Receives Initial Accreditation

Thanks to the leadership of Susan Gaumont (CGCC) and Lori Anonsen (PVCC) in preparing for the accreditation process of the Dietetic Technician Program, the Program has received its initial accreditation.

A team of four national reviewers conducted a thorough site visit in December 2005 for the accreditation process for the CGCC and PVCC Dietetic Technician Programs. The reviewers met with students, faculty, site preceptors, advisory committee members, and administrators from both colleges.

The evaluators in their oral exit report had excellent comments on the many strengths of the program including: 1) directors of the program are highly dedicated, professional, and provide great leadership, 2) administrative support is provided for the program, 3) preceptors of the program are top professionals, 4) there are excellent adjunct faculty with experience in the dietetics field, 5) the program attracts high caliber students, 6) the program has a committed advisory council, and 7) students are learning through a variety of planned learning experiences and are meeting the program objectives.

The Dietetic Technician Program is part of the Wellness Division.

Bill Crawford Appointed Vice President of WRCBAA

August 11, 2006

Congratulations to Dean of Career and Technical Education Bill Crawford, who was recently appointed to the Executive Board of the Western Regional Council on Black American Affairs (WRCBAA) on which he will serve as Vice President of Programs. WRCBAA is an affiliate of the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.

The WRCBAA Executive Board oversees NCBAA activities within the western region states. The Vice President for Programs provides leadership for the Committee on Programs, in cooperation with the officers of WRCBAA.

CGCC Selected for National Learning Community Project

August 1, 2006

Kudos to the CGCC faculty team who were recently selected to participate in the National Project on Assessing Learning in Learning Communities.

The National Project on Assessing Learning in Learning Communities begins September 2006 and ends June 2008. The team from CGCC includes Yvonne Reineke, Bill Mullaney, Heather Horn, Leslie Hodgson, Chris Schnick and Vanessa Sandoval. The group will be participating in the first year of the national project on assessing learning in learning communities. The purpose of this two-year project is to develop collaborative assessment practices that focus on the characteristics of student learning made possible in learning community contexts.
