CGCC Hermanas Conference Event – Friday, April 7, 2017 - 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Hermanas (Sisters): Diseña Tu Futuro (Design Your Future)is designed to introduce young Latina girls to STEM careers and majors in a fun and interactive way.
Guided by the mission of increasing the number of under-represented
females in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
fields, the one-day conference provides a supportive environment in
which young women can interact with successful Latinas in STEM careers,
explore technological careers, receive encouragement to finish school,
attend college, and to pursue their goals. This conference has
partnered with the Intel Corporation to plan, and host a day of learning
and fun activities that stimulate that interest in STEM, since 2006.
There are two separate day-long conferences, each specifically hosting
middle school students and high school students. Each conference brings
approximately 150 students to the Chandler-Gilbert Community College
Campuses for activities including science experiments and professional
and personal development workshops. Students are invited from local
community K-12 school districts, such as Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and
Many young Latina girls don’t know what opportunities are available in
technology, or what it takes to be an engineer, scientist or technical
professional. They don’t even realize it is an option. All too often,
there is the perception that these professions are not considered
"traditional careers" for Latinas - as reflected by the low number of
Latinas that major in the technical fields. This is the segment of our
increasingly growing population in Arizona that is most at risk of not
being prepared to enter the workforce of the future.
- Welcome – Participants are welcomed to the campus and introduced to the event
- Hands-on Workshops – Participants will engage in
fun, interactive, hands-on activities to introduce concepts in problem
solving, teamwork and creativity
- Latina Town Hall – Participants will have the
opportunity to meet and speak with successful Latina professionals and
learn about their educational and professional journey. Hermanas
graduates will also share what they did in high school to prepare for
- Resource Fair – Educational institutions from
across the valley will share information about resources. All Hermanas
participants will visit each booth, take information, and ask questions.
- Closing Ceremony – Participants will reflect on what they learned, complete a survey and enter a raffle to win a tablet computer!
