Workplace/Classroom Violence 

Threatening with a gun, knife, or other weapon:

  • Use panic alarm or duress code if applicable.
  • Remain calm and make no sudden moves.
  • Maintain non-intimidating eye contact with the individual with the weapon.
  • Don't risk harm to yourself or others during the negotiation process.
  • Never try to grab the weapon.
  • Communicate appropriately: keep the individual talking with open-ended questions (How, Why and Tell me about…).
  • Listen actively to the individual using first names and plural personal pronouns (What can we do…?) and the "you /your" viewpoint (What do you want?What is your objective?).
  • Recognize and validate the comments of the individual (You have the right to feel or think the way you do).
  • Follow instructions from the individual with the weapon.
  • Ask permission to notify Public Safety personnel about the situation.
  • Watch for a possible chance to escape to a safe area.

Person shouting, swearing, and threatening:

  • Have someone notify Public Safety at 480-732-7280 (Pecos) or 480-988-8888 (Williams).
  • Remain calm and make no sudden moves.
  • Maintain non-intimidating eye contact with the individual.
  • Don't risk harm to yourself or others during the negotiation process.
  • Communicate appropriately: Keep the individual talking with open-ended questions (How, Why, Tell me about …).
  • Actively listen to the individual using first names and plural personal pronouns (What can we do…?) and the "you/your" viewpoint (What do you want? What is your objective?).
  • Recognize and validate the comments of the individual (You have the right to feel or think the way you do).
  • Ask permission to notify Public Safety about the situation.
  • Negotiate with the individual to sit down.
  • Watch for a possible chance to escape to a safe area.
