Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a computerized defibrillator. It can analyze the heart rhythm of a person in cardiac arrest and recognizes shockable rhythms. The AED provides step-by-step instructions through voice prompts and illuminated indicators.
The use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be by trained individuals.
Call 911, retrieve AED and return back to the victim.
- First, place AED unit on ground next to victim. Open the AED and press the POWER ON.
- Attach the AED to the victim's bare chest (AED cables, pads).
- ANALYZE the rhythm.
- Ensure that all bystanders stand clear of the victim.
- SHOCK (if shock is indicated; follow prompts).
If no shock advised by the AED, continue CPR (see below).
