H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)
As public health officials prepare for the resurgence of H1N1 flu this fall, officials at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and the Maricopa County Community College District are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take steps to protect the health of the college community if necessary.
The college urges students, faculty, and staff to self-monitor their health and contact their healthcare provider if they experience flu symptoms.
FLU PREVENTION
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reminds you to incorporate the following flu-prevention measures into your routine in order to stay healthy:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Stay home if you get sick. The CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
IF YOU GET SICK
You are encouraged to stay home if you become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea. You may want to contact your health care provider if you are worried about your symptoms. Your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed.
Students with suspected or confirmed cases of H1N1 are encouraged to report their illness to CGCC’s Vice President of Student Affairs, William Crawford, by calling (480) 732-7309 or via email at bill.crawford.iii@cgcmail.maricopa.edu. Students can also confidentially report their illness by filling out an online form that can be accessed by clicking the following link - Student H1N1 Reporting Form.
The Vice President of Student Affairs will work with you on an individual basis to protect your privacy and to determine the best course of action to help you successfully complete the fall semester.
