News Updates: CGCC Offers Creative Writing Certificate Program

CGCC Offers Creative Writing Certificate Program

This spring, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, along with Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, Phoenix College, and Rio Salado College, will be offering a new Academic Certificate in Creative Writing.

“This certificate provides a unique and innovative opportunity for those interested in pursuing a course of study in creative writing in a vibrant community of award-winning, nationally renowned authors of fiction, poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting,” said CGCC Creative Writing Coordinator, Patrick Finn.

Instruction will include both traditional and online classes, workshops, and conferences that are accessible to writers of all levels regardless of academic or professional standing. Students also have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working on the editorial board of award-winning literary magazines.

Any creative writing courses taken at the five certificate-offering colleges are transferable toward the certificate. Only six of the required 24 certificate credits must be earned at the individual college in which students enroll, offering writers tremendous flexibility in course scheduling and convenience.

Completion of the Academic Certificate in Creative Writing does not lead to a particular degree program but is intended to help writers develop their talent and craft, as well as their continued enjoyment of writing for personal growth. Upon completing the certificate, each student produces an original writing portfolio that may be included in applications to undergraduate and graduate programs in creative writing.
