Tips for Students:

  • Print papers double-sided. 
  •  Ask teachers if you can submit homework electronically.
  • Use a laptop for readings and note-taking.
  • Only print what you need.
  • Check over the document before you hit print to eliminate multiple prints for mini-mistakes.
  • Print multiple PowerPoint slides per page
  • Copy and paste the web site text you need into Microsoft Word.
  • Adjust the margins, font, and font size as necessary.
  • Many sites have unnecessary pictures, graphics, and large text which waste ink and paper.
  • Print double-sided
  • Print and copy on both sides of paper
  • Make sure your printer and copier's default settings are "duplex" or "double-sided" printing.

  • Preview before you print
  • Use "print preview"
  • Minimize wasted paper by checking your documents for blank pages or irregular margins before hitting print.
  • Print only what you need
  • Print sections of documents
  • If you need a small amount of information from a large document, highlight the section you need, and check the 'print selection' box..

    Tips for Faculty and Staff

    • Let your students know you will accept double-sided papers.
    • Post syllabi and readings on Blackboard.
    • Allow students to use laptops for readings and note-taking.
    • Communicate by e-mail whenever possible.  
    • Provide language in your syllabus regarding electronic copies or double siding.
    • Use 10pt. font in creating documents.
    • Make your top and bottom margins 0.5 in (and right and left too).
    • Use scrap paper for class handouts.
    • Send students handouts/assignments electronically.
    • When sending print jobs to service center, request printing on scrap jobs.
    • Ask your office administrator to fill one tray with non-confidential scrap paper for reuse.
    • Use course reserves in the library instead of making copies for all students.
    • Encourage students to reuse paper on draft copies.
    • Save all non-confidential one sided paper for reuse. 

    Meeting Materials: Committees and Groups

  • • All documents to be distributed are made into PDF files and emailed
  • • All documents available on Sharepoint or Blackboard
  • • Bring laptop to meeting to review materials online or flash drive
  • • Use projector to display material on screen during meeting
  • • Inform attendees what printed material will be distributed so that they also don’t print it
  • • Any printed handouts are double-sided, smaller font size, small margins
