CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
The Williams Campus is the second largest of the Chandler-Gilbert Community
College (CGCC) campuses and, at present, represents the most diverse collection
of buildings of the three locations. Consequently, care must be taken when either
expanding existing facilities or adding new facilities that the currently disparate
character of the campus is not perpetuated. To the contrary, as additional space
is developed it must lead toward a more cohesive image that represents the place
of this institution in its community. As the planning team got more involved
with this campus, it became clear that there were zones of land use that aided
in organizing the Master Plan. In addition to these, the desire of CGCC to establish
its presence at what is to be the main entrance (N. Avery and S. Sossaman Roads)
meant that the first building, complete with its associated improvements, be
placed near this entrance in the General Academic/Student Services zone. This
building should be configured to screen the existing Burn Building and to effectively
establish the campus’ front door.
Another unique aspect of this campus is that it is actually divided into two
separate areas, one north, and the other south of a portion of ASU East’s
campus that houses the Flight Simulator Building. Eventually, a pedestrian link
should be used to establish continuity of the CGCC campus between these two components.
There is also the need to develop “central plants” for the various
buildings that compose the south and north components of campus. CGCC has determined
that two central plants, one for the north side of the campus and one for the
south side of the campus, should be considered as the most practical answer for
handling both the current and future needs. The central plant for the north campus
should be located just east of the existing ATC Building. The central plant for
the south campus should be located on the north side of the existing Physical
Education Center Building at the site of the current equipment.
