A STRATEGY FOR GROWTH
Academic Program
Through the Sun Lake Education Center (SLEC), Chandler-Gilbert Community College
(CGCC) offers non-credit and credit computer literacy courses, non-credit personal
enrichment courses, and the Institute of Learning for Seniors programs.
In order to minimize the need for new buildings and to optimize the current
facility, the SLEC Coordinator is working diligently with selected academic division
chairs and faculty to expand class offerings during less utilized dates and times.
However, the need for additional space is mandatory to address projected growth
and to accommodate additional students and classes. Physical size limitations
of the existing classrooms prohibit the expansion into traditional academic course
offerings that normally employ standard 25-35 students per class ratios.
Access to additional classrooms will allow for general education courses such
as English Composition, Communication, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Humanities,
Sciences, and a broader Computer Literacy program.
A large portion of the enrollment at SLEC is in non-credit areas. In order
to maintain the current level of support to the senior residents and increase
credit course offerings, normal size classrooms, i.e., 750-900 net square feet,
will be needed to support courses such as English, Mathematics, Economics, Psychology,
Humanities, and Communication. While these classes are currently offered at the
Pecos and Williams campuses, there is also significant growth anticipated in
the Greater Sun Lakes area.
Existing Facilities
The complex is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Riggs Road
and Alma School Road. This parcel is within the boundaries of the City of Chandler,
but remains unincorporated and is just one mile north of Maricopa County and
Pinal County line.
The SLEC comprises 5,000 GSF at the 9.5 acre Sun Lakes Health Center complex,
and houses a computer lab, three general classrooms, a gathering area, general
in-take area, and administrative offices.
