Building Excellence Blocks- the blocks have been made. Margie will ask Liz Starks to help order the plates since she has provided this support in past years. The group will discuss defining stricter criteria at the April 10th meeting. MLTS- Julie Wechsler shared a marketing brochure for review and then gave an overview of the Maricopa Learns Through Service (MLTS) pilot program. Steps are taken by the district to enter into a signed agreement with the agency and the district. Prior to signatures however, a Certificate of Insurance and a site visit is performed. This agreement is separate from any agreement that may be entered into for student service learning. The program has been developed for a 3 6 month commitment. However, adaptation to another time frame is acceptable. The focus is to build consistencies. The committee discussed some of the hesitancies that employees may have when completing the form. For instance, perhaps an employee has the idea that they would just like to help someone and finds it difficult to define a learning objective. Julie explained that an example of an objective could be Learning about my potential to give back to the community, or personal renewal, etc. The employee would need to show some sort of outcome but could ask for help if need be to describe the outcome. A time log is used to keep track of the hours. The program allows for one and one-half hours per week, or six hours per month of leave which could be used in addition to volunteering ones personal time for events if thats the employees preference. This program is adaptable and focused in helping to eliminate any barriers that would restrict supporting the employee and the agency within the parameters of the program. Julie will send out an application for the childcare center and would be happy to meet with the director and is flexible. She would be happy to meet one on one or with one or more EDT representatives and the director of the childcare center upon our request.
