Gila River Review
Sarah van Praag Leonard

SITTING IN MY BACKYARD IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA,
JANUARY, 2010

Stark moon aloft tonight – a gargoyle grimace, widened eyes and howling mouth, cold harsh light, unending space.  Fronds unfurl, tall palm tree stretches, cleaves the garish globe.  Dark earth spins, clouds swirl.  Shadows float below.  Long armed saguaro sentinel stands guard against the forbidding sphere.  A whispery whisk of wings,  I pull my sweater close.  Best not remain out here. Crooked mouth, malignant grin, vacant orbs in velvet sky, the moon’s too bright.  I shut my eyes.   Beware!
