 Google eMail/Calendar migration

Employee email and calendar system to be replaced by Google!

Request for proposals to provide professional services to migrate Maricopa email to Google email and calendar systems has selected Cloud Sherpas as the consulting resource to work with Maricopa over the 2012 calendar year. Four pilot schools PC, MC, SC, and GC will be targeted for early migration in Spring and determine the approach for the remaining colleges through Fall 2012 timeframe.

Further information on the Google email project is available on the District IT Governance site or send questions via email to google.feedback@domail.maricopa.edu

 Canvas Migration

You have probably seen some of the emails mentioning Maricopa's move away from Blackboard to Canvas. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we've received:

How long are we going to keep using Blackboard?

The timeline is still not completely finalized, and is dependent on multiple factors that may change, but our current plan is to have 100% of CGCC courses migrated to Canvas by Summer 2014.

When will Canvas be available?

Again, the timeline is not finalized yet, however a very small early adopters group is expected to have access to the production system by late Fall 2012 at the earliest, if the governing board approves the contract to expand Canvas beyond MCC.

 Faculty Development

The Instructional Technology group is constantly working with the Faculty Development Team to create relevant and timely training opportunities.

This Spring, look forward to a semester of great Tech Tuesdays, with our signature Web 2.0 workshops generally on the second Tuesdays of the month. This semester, we are focusing on Google tools to prepare us for the migration of our email system.

Tech Tuesdays will also continue our new theme of First Tuesdays, which features Q&A sessions, discussions, and panels on instructional technology topics.

We'll also continue offering Blackboard training on the fourth tuesday of the month, and open labs for all technology questions on third Tuesdays. View a full Tech Tuesdays calendar PDF on Instructional Technology's Inside webpage here.

We also continue to offer other workshops, open labs, and districtwide training opportunities. For the latest tech faculty development opportunities and open labs, always check the Instructional Technology Calendar on Inside.

 Seamless Student

Seamless Student Experience is a OneMaricopa initiative charged with creating a district-wide business model that will transform the students experience into one that is truly seamless as they navigate the financial aid, admissions, records, registration, and transcript processes across all of the Maricopa Colleges.

Project scope as defined by the Chancellors office, Rufus Glasper has identified the following non-negotiable outcomes:

  • Creation of a single transcript and student record
  • Creation of a single entry process for admissions and registration
  • Develop a consistent process for Financial Aid application and awards
  • Standardize the process for admissions and fee payment

For more information review the Seamless Student White Paper or contact Victor Navarro or Jesus Chaidez who serve as college representatives on this team.

 Standard Software updates

Browsers and Plugins

Student machines have been updated to the latest major version of standard browser plugs-ins. This included Air, Java JRE, Shockware Player, and Silverlight. Employee desktop computers have been updated as well, but employee and department laptops have not.

It is anticipated that all classrooms will be updated to Firefox version 9, prior to the start of the classes.

MS Office 2010

Office 2010 has been standard in classrooms, CIC labs, and libraries since the beginning of Fall 2011.

Many employee machines have been updated, but others have not.  It is planned that all machines not yet updated to Office 2010 will be updated the fourth week of January. An email will be sent a week prior as a reminder of this update.

Windows 7

Windows 7 has been standard in classrooms, CIC labs, and libraries since the beginning of Fall 2011.

Many employee machines have been migrated, but 180 machines have not.  Migrations to Windows 7 will continue through the Spring 2012 semester.  Communication and coordination from TSS will precede the migration of each machine.

 Inventory Audit - FM5 Agreement

Employee laptop users be advised!

Per the email announcement from Tom Nicol, CGCC will be conducting a "stewardship inventory" of all college assets ranging from $1000-$5000 thru Jan 20th. Please be aware this includes computer equipment in use at home. Employees have been requested to return all equipment to assist with the physical verification and inventory audit requirements, Tom will also be requesting all employees to submit a FM5 property loan agreement form.

For further information or questions on the FM5 loan agreement please contact Gabe Garcia or Tom Nicol.

 Instructional Technology Update

Instructional Technology Role Changes

It's been a busy academic year so far, including some functional changes within the team. Here is a current breakdown of who is responsible for what:

  • Nonie Bernard - Blackboard support (primarily) and Canvas training team
  • Quintin Baker - Blackboard support (primarily)
  • Linda Zehr - eLearning and Quality Matters, Academic Technology Alliance
  • Mary McGlasson - Emerging Technologies and Tech Tuesday
  • Miguel Fernandez - ITC Chair and implementing eLearning Task Force recommendations
  • Darien Ripple - Schools App on facebook
  • Ben Archer - Everything else (Canvas implementation, Academic Technology Alliance, classroom software, Blackboard support backup, eLearning Advisory Group, etc.)

If you have any Blackboard needs, please send them to blackboard@cgcmail.maricopa.edu or come to an open lab session, as Linda is no longer handling Blackboard support. She has plenty to keep her busy with her other duties, so please be considerate and send all requests through the proper channels.
