 MEID standard login

Chandler Gilbert students and employees are the first users in Maricopa to enjoy a consistent login experience for CGCC and district systems. This is a result of the successful implementation of the College Identity Management System (CIMS).

As a result of this project employees and students will use a standard login using their MEID and password. Once the remaining colleges in Maricopa implement CIMS this consistent login method will be used for access to all systems in Maricopa.

Once again CGCC technology is on the forefront of innovation and technology advancement in Maricopa!  Everybody in TSS played a role in the success, special kudos go out to Michael Berry for leading this effort.

 CIMS readiness check-up

Laptop computers
that have not been used on campus this summer will require special attention to be compliant with the CIMS Identity Management project.  Faculty and Staff are encouraged to drop in to the Help Desk for assistance:

Blackboard open lab & Hands-On Technology training

Get ready for Fall semester with Blackboard open labs and Hands-On Technology (HOT!) training this week and next. These combined open labs will help you prepare for your Fall classes in all areas of technology, including Blackboard, email, SIS, class rosters, and any other technology issues standing between you and an awesome semester!

Check the Instructional Technology Calendar for ongoing Blackboard and HOT training dates every day through the first week of classes, and at least twice per week through the semester.

 Classroom software

Culiminating a continuous process improvement effort that started Fall 2010, we now have a new and improved solution for installing software in classrooms.

This new system we call Course Software Request (CSR) is driven by creating of a relationship with software to courses. This effort of matching software to courses is coordinated by Ben Archer, who is contacting all lead faculty within each division to develop a master list of software to courses. With this list, we then leverage the class schedule to drive our software deployment activities based on course offerings and classroom locations.

This was truly a collaborative project involving faculty stakeholders and facilitated by our very own trained Business Process Analysts, Mark Schufletowski and Ben Archer. Plus Vinny Scalisi and his team of Desktop Technicians did an amazing job of embracing a new paradigm in how we deploy software.

 ePort end of life

Please be aware ePort dependent web applications will be discontinued this semester (Aug 31st). The following ePort based applications are the last 3 that are in the process of getting replaced.

  • Inquiry Follow-up used by Recruitment to track student prospects
  • MyCGCC Portal
  • Course evaluations

In every case where ePort features have been discontinued, TSS has provided an alternative solution.

ePort has outlived its useful life and served CGCC very well for serveral years. Thanks to Ron Slamka, Michael Berry, and Brien Dieterle for their technical expertise for keeping ePort alive and supporting a graceful end of life transition.

 Instructional Technology Update

The Instructional Technology department has had a busy summer! In addition to Camp QM and Blackboard Bonanza/HOT! training, here are a few new updates:
  • Facebook grant - CGCC and Phoenix College are the co-recipients of a grant from the League for Innovation in the Community College to incorporate social networking technology to foster student-to-student connections on campus through Inigral's Schools App. While it is very early in the process, it is a very exciting opportunity to improve student retention and persistence. If you have any questions about this, please contact Ben Archer.
  • OYO Course Production Specialist II - Please welcome back Nonie Bernard, who has been working as our temporary Course Production Specialist, as she moves into a full-time role as our new Course Production specialist II. Nonie will be primarily responsible for Blackboard support and open labs.
  • Student Response Systems (Clickers) - The standard model of clickers that CGCC has purchased in the past are not supported under Office 2010. Therefore, it was necessary to take a new look at the marketplace and evaluate some of the key players. While free options like PollEverywhere work for many needs, faculty who are interested in purchasing new student response systems can read about the research that was done here.
  • Learning Management System RFP - The RFP process for Maricopa's Learning Management System (currently Blackboard) completed several months ago and a recommendation has been moved forward to the Vice Chancellor for IT's office. To adhere to the processes required by the RFP, Governing Board, and Vice Chancellor for Information Technology, no additional information is available at this time. More formal communication will be coming from VC Kahkedjian in the future, pending approval of the recommendation by the Governing Board, so keep an eye on your email!

 Web Updates

With the fall semester rapidly approaching and anticipating our faculty's return to campus and all of the preparation they will have in front of them, it seems prudent to remind everyone to use the Web Request Form for all web updates requested of our Web Team.  This will ensure that your request doesn't get lost in someone's inbox and fall through the cracks.

Also, watch the announcements for any WebCS Open Lab opportunities this fall!  It's a great time to get away from the rest of your responsibilities and make sure your web presence is all it can be!

 Video Conference Tools in B102

Video Conference Room B 102

Thanks to a District Initiative, we have the ability to Video Conference through the Rio Salado Bridge System. The systems lives in B102 and is available for scheduling.

Contact Tim Keefe for more information.

Get your tech fix at Williams Wednesdays!

This semester, the Technology group is kicking off Williams Wednesdays! Every Wednesday afternoon from noon-4:00pm, we will have a technology presentation or open lab at Williams. Sessions are tentatively scheduled for Bridget 112, with a backup room of Baylor 124 for schedule conflicts.

Scheduled sessions include free and easy Web 2.0 tools also presented at Tech Tuesday (thanks to Dr. Mary McGlasson, Emerging Technologies coordinator), Blackboard tools and training (thanks to Linda Zehr, eLearning Coordinator), Blackboard open labs (with Nonie Bernard, Course Production Specialist), and Helpdesk sessions (with Mark Shufletowski, manager of the TSS Helpdesk)

Check the Instructional Technology Calendar for upcoming Williams Wednesdays sessions!

 Quality Matters and Camp QM

This year's Camp QM: Of Course Quality Matters! summer institute was a great success. Our 24 residential and adjunct faculty attendees had the opportunity to learn about fundamentals of instructional design, writing good learning objectives, and aligning course materials and assessments to those objectives. They were also able to apply those concepts to courses they're currently teaching, and then look at the final product through the lens of the Quality Matters(tm) rubric.

This Fall, our Camp QM team (Ben Archer, Nonie Bernard, and Linda Zehr) will have the opportunity for an encore performance. MCLI will be hosting Camp QM at Rio Salado this September-October. If you missed the summer institute, but still want to learn about Quality Matters, keep an eye out for email from MCLI!

Finally, special kudos to star student Belinda Ramos, who has already submitted the necessary paperwork to begin her Quality Matters review! Go Belinda!

 Obsolete employee computers

Be nice to your old, tired, obsolete computer..

Employees be aware there is a standard process in place to replace computers which do not function properly due to the age of the equipment. Any Faculty and/or Staff computer that is 4+ years old qualifies for replacement. Supplies are limited but annually we are able to replace approximately 25% of our computers across campus. The process is driven by submitting the online form below. If your computer is at least 4+ years old it will match our obsolescence list and qualify for replacement.

 Digital Signage

Thanks to Ron Slamka's latest enhancement to our digital signage capabilities, we have leveraged the use of the large screen displays in TSS to provide real time information on Remedy work ticket status. This is proving to be extremely helpful for Technicians to view work order tickets as they are created by Help Desk staff. Click on the following link to view a sample movie of what this screen looks like.
