Distribution Lists (DLs) are official lists of college emails. They are used to provide a convenient way for mass mailings to college groups and employees. Each distribution list has a moderator, and the moderator can add or remove emails from the list inside the
Personal Administration Tool (PAT). Moderators are automatic recipients of any email sent to a distribution list.
In addition to the moderator, others can be granted permission to edit a distribution list as well. Inside the PAT tool, under Distribution Lists, there is an option to edit a non-personally-owned distribution list. To do so, the user must put in the name of the distribution list (which can be found using our
addressbook), the exact distribution list email itself, and the password. The password is set and given out by the moderator of the DL). Once all of these have been entered the user is then given a window in which to make changes to the DL.
Distribution lists also have a set size limit for attachments. Due to the mass mailing aspect, the size of any attachment (or collection of attachments) on an email cannot exceed 800KB. The reason notwithstanding is this single file is being duplicated and the size multiplied by the number of people on the list. Large filesizes could cause the email server to slow, thus the limit has been set. Emails to individual users has a better limit at 2MB.
