EMT-Basic
The Arizona Department of Health Services certifies all levels of Emergency Medical Technicians in Arizona. To become certified as an EMT in the State of Arizona, you must successfully complete a Department approved training course.
Basic EMT courses are offered at many of the Maricopa Community Colleges. At the completion of the course, you will need to submit an application for certification to AZ DHS and successfully pass the National Registry written examination.
EMT-Paramedic
Advanced level EMT courses are similarly offered through Department approved training sites. Many of these courses are organized on an "as needed" basis by the organizations that employ Paramedics. The courses are then directed by DHS approved training sites. Most of these courses are closed to non-sponsored candidates. If you are not affiliated with one of these organizations, you will need to find an open course. For a complete list of Paramedic course providers, visit the AZ DHS website.
National Registry Testing
In January 2007, National Registry implemented Computer Based Testing for all their written examinations. This process has replaced the traditional paper and pencil testing with a process that promises to offer a "more fair and accurate evaluation of the candidate's competency".
The practical examination process has remained unchanged for approximately the last 10 years. This process consists of multiple skills tests that are presented in a scenario-type format to test the candidate's ability to perform in the prehospital setting. For a complete list of the skills sheets used for this testing format, please visit the NR EMT practical skills site.
