What is psychology?

Psychology is the science of human and animal behavior and mental processes. Although this definition may seem simple, the field of psychology has actually become quite diverse and complex. The roots of psychology date back thousands of years and can be found within the histories of philosophy as well as the physical sciences. Currently, psychology encompasses many different areas of research and practice.

Why should I take psychology at Chandler-Gilbert Community College?

Psychology courses have always been an essential part of the general education curriculum at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC). Students have historically taken psychology courses for a variety of reasons, including personal interest in psychological topics, fulfillment of requirements for other majors, as well as for future degrees and careers in psychology.

CGCC's psychology course offerings have become quite comprehensive, and now constitute a program of study. Students are now able to progress through a specific, yet flexible, sequence of psychology courses including PSY 101 (Introduction to Psychology), PSY 230 (Psychological Statistics), PSY 290 (Research Methods) which are required for psychology degrees at nearly all four-year colleges and universities. CGCC also offers a psychology transfer partnership degree with Arizona State University which includes these courses.

In addition to required courses for psychology majors, CGCC also offers various elective courses that are often of interest to those who are not majoring in psychology as well. The variety of psychology course offerings at CGCC helps students acquire a solid base of psychology knowledge and/or fulfill core general education requirements toward a multitude of associate's and bachelor's degree programs.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Scott Silberman, residential psychology faculty at CGCC with any questions. He can be reached by phone at (480) 732-7078 or by email at Scott.Silberman@cgcmail.Maricopa.edu.
