Collegiate Lineman Competition
2012 Events and Rules

A team shall consist of three team members who are currently enrolled in the school from which they are competing or currently working for an Arizona utility .as a first year apprentice. Instructors must attend a mandatory team meeting prior to the start of the event. The total of the each team member's individual performance on the events listed below will constitute the team's composite score. Teams will be allowed one alternate per team. An alternate may be used only in the case of injury to an original team member. Only event judges and participants are permitted in the climbing area. Times are used only in the event of a tie.

NEW this year-
All participants are required to use fall restraints devices while participating in climbing events i.e. Bucksqueeze, Rope Lariat, Jellcoe, BSC77.

Event 1

Cross Arm Change Out - on 35' Pole
  • Structure will be framed to C-1 specifications. Note 1/2 Inch bolt will be used in place of lag.
  • Tools allowed: 12 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, hammer, channel lock, screwdrivers, hand line and sheave, climbing tools of the participants' discretion. Note: NO quick wrenches of any kind.
The following steps apply:
  1. Time starts with first hook on pole.
  2. Set hand line for rigging of the crossarm and loosen crossarm.
  3. Lower crossarm to the ground. Make sure crossarm comes in contact with earth.
  4. Bring crossarm back up bolt it back in place.
  5. Participants will then tug on the crossarm braces to assure judge the nut is tight.
  6. Lower sheave making sure to yell headache then drop hand line.
  7. Climb down pole.
  8. The time stops when first foot hits the ground.
Infractions (2 points each)
    • Loose hardhat
    • Hardhat backwards
    • No safety glasses
    • No long sleeves
    • Missing hardware
    • Square washers not on straight
    • Loose hardware
    • Not yelling headache
    • Dropping tools
    • Hot - dogging
Hot-dogging - Hot dogging is defined as a lineman "being out of control." Examples: Both gaffs out of the pole at the same time, drop steps, excessive un-controlled speed. The lineman must maintain one gaff in the pole at all times. Slips: There will be no penalty as long as three point contact is maintained.


Event 2

Framing a C-1 Structure
  • Structure will be framed to C-1 specifications.
  • Tools allowed: adjustable wrenches, hammer, channel lock, screwdrivers. Note: NO quick wrenches of any kind.
The following steps apply:
  1. Time starts when student crosses the starting line with tools. (Student starts on tarp)
  2. Pole will be on gin.
  3. Frame pole with a pole top pin and insulator.
  4. Frame and mount crossarm with pins, insulators and braces.
  5. Align crossarm and braces. Do not drive lag
  6. Install upset bolt with insulator.
  7. Time stops when student crosses the starting line with tools.
  8. Student may arrange material on tarp.
Infractions (2 points each)
    • Loose hardhat
    • Hardhat backwards
    • No safety glasses
    • No long sleeves
    • Missing hardware
    • Square washers not on straight
    • Loose hardware
    • Crossarm not aligned
Event 3

Obstacle Course Event
  • Obstacle course event; on a 35' pole framed with two cross-arms and an arrestor on bottom arm, top arm will have a cut-out, change arrestor from one side to other, remove handline climb to next arm and change cut-out from one side of arm to other.
  • Tools allowed: 12 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, hammer, channel lock, screwdrivers, hand line and sheave, climbing tools of the participants' discretion.
The following steps apply:
  1. Contestant must climb the face of the pole up and down.
  2. Time starts when first hook touches pole with man standing an arm's length from pole.
  3. Set hand line in case of dropped hardware. (All dropped items must be sent up via hand line)
  4. Change arrestor from one side to other, making sure spring washer is compressed.
  5. Change cut-out from one side of arm to other; making sure spring washer is compressed.
  6. Lower sheave making sure to yell headache then drop hand line.
  7. Climb down pole.
  8. The time stops when first foot hits the ground.
Infractions (2 points each)
    • Loose hardhat
    • Hardhat backwards
    • No safety glasses
    • No long sleeves
    • Not belting off above mark
    • Dropping golf ball
    • Hot - dogging
Hot-dogging - Hot dogging is defined as a lineman "being out of control". (This call is at the discretion of the Judge) Examples: Both gaffs out of the pole at the same time, drop steps. The lineman must maintain one gaff in the pole at all times.


Event 4

Written Test
  • Record answers on answer sheet not on the test.
  • Twenty five question test, using multiple choice and true/false questions.
  • Questions are derived from material contained in Sections 2 to 14 in the publication listed below.
  • The Lineman's & Cableman's Handbook, Eleventh Edition (Published by McGraw-Hill,Copyright 2002, ISBN 0-07-136240-1)
  • Each participant starts with 100 points.
  • Each incorrect answer or un-answered question is a 4 point deduction.
  • Testing time is limited to 15 minutes.
  • After 15 minutes expire the participant will be stopped.
  • Participants will have one (1) min. to ask questions once the student has properly filled in the participant information at the top of the answer sheet.
  • Time starts when the participant has the test, answer sheet and pencil on the table in front of him/her.
  • Use a pencil to blot out the letter for your answers on the answer sheet.
  • No questions after test starts. (Including test time expired)
  • Time stops when participant notifies the Testing Judge he/she is done, or when the 15 minute testing time is up.
  • The Testing Judge will record the completion time after all participants of that team has finished.
  • Time will only be used to break a tie.
  • Any protests must be made before exiting the testing area.
Only Event Judges and Participants are permitted in the Testing area.

Top Hand Award

The Top Hand Award has changed. The events Cross-arm Change out, C-1 Framing, Obstacle Course will be the only events considered for this award. The total times from these three events will determine the Top Hand Award

Speed Climb

Due to safety concerns here at CGCC's Lineman's Competition the competition committee has decided to remove the Speed Climbing event from the regular Competition format. The committee also recognized the popularity of the event and it will now be just a fun event.

Pole Climb on 35' Pole
  • Structure will be framed to C-1 specifications.
  • Tools needed: NO TOOLS
The following steps apply:
  1. Time starts with first hook on pole.
  2. Participant must wear a fall restraint at all times.
  3. Work gloves with a gauntlet must be used ground to ground. (No driving gloves etc.)
  4. Climb pole, ring bell and climb down.
  5. Belt must be above marked area on pole and participant set back in belt.
  6. Trade the new ball for the old golf ball. Put old golf ball in bag.
  7. The time stops when first foot hits the ground.
  8. No free fall or hot-dogging is allowed. The participant must be in control at all times.
