Electric Utility Technology

Leading to a technical certificate or A.A.S. Degree, the Electric Utility Technology (EUT) Program provides students with basic preparation in overhead and underground construction and maintenance procedures. Focusing on a basic program of performance based objectives and field experiences, the program provides successful students with skills and knowledge needed in this rapidly growing field.

Arizona Public Service a Pinnacle West company located in Phoenix, AZ. lists Chandler Gilbert Community Colleges Electric Utility Technology Program as step two to becoming a Journeyman Line worker for APS in its On magazine published issue 2003-04. The program is designed to produce a highly skilled, well informed entry level (Apprentice) Lineworker who is familiar with the use of tools, materials, and equipment of the trade. The areas of personal safety and occupational safety is stressed as integral parts of each area of the craft.

Admission Criteria:
Application and acceptance into the EUT program.

Program Prerequisites:
Student must pass a physical examination.

Electric lineworkers: What do they do?

Electrical lineworkers install and repair electrical transmission and distribution systems for investor owned municipal and rural electric utility companies. Lineworkers climb poles or work on underground systems installing hardware, conductors and transformers.

The Electrical Lineworker student will be trained in:

Power line Installation and Maintenance.

Pole climbing and use of tools

Truck and Equipment operation

Overhead and Underground Distribution construction/maintenance

First aid and CPR

Beginning Income:
A beginning apprentice receives 35-50 percent of the journeyman rate to start, followed by increases every six months. Average minimum $45,000.00 to $73,000.00.

Average Income:
Approximate annual average $65,000.00 to $120,000.00 depending on company.

Employment Outlook:
Due to local growth and a large number of retiring line workers over the next few years, there will be an increased need for trained pre apprentice and apprentice line workers.

Employment Opportunities:
Municipal Power Companies, Investor Owned Power Companies, Privately Owned Power Companies, Power Line Contractors and Local Utility Companies.
