Workshop Descriptions

Avoid Plagiarism Like the Plague: How to Use Research Right!

Citing Right: Using MLA & APA to Acknowledge Your Sources
  • Learn how to avoid plagiarism and maintain academic integrity by citing your sources appropriately. Topics will include why citing right is important to you, using in-text citation/parenthetical notes, creating a Works Cited or References page, and where to go for help with MLA or APA when you need it.

  • Also check out our Citation Savvy video (Note: this video uses MLA 6th ed. and APA 5th ed., so check current handbooks and handouts for stylistic updates)

Computer Savvy: Tips for Formatting Any Writing Assignment
  • Are you unsure how to format papers or presentations? From setting margins to inserting tables and pictures, this workshop will help familiarize you with some of the basics of Microsoft Word.

  • College writing, here I come! Take your college essays to a new level of critical thinking and impress your professors by using rhetorical analysis in your next essay assignment. In this workshop, students will discover how to “break down” a text and analyze HOW an author writes, rather than only WHAT he or she actually wrote by understanding and articulating the writing strategies used to achieve his or her goal or purpose.

  • We are surrounded! Visual media are all around us daily, and your ability to effectively use a visual and analyze its content is a high-level critical thinking skill required in many college essays. Bring sophistication to your college essay writing by learning to make observations, interpret symbols, and note emotions that visual media inspire in the viewer in unique ways.

  • Is your professor asking you to use synthesis to take your writing to a higher level? Strong academic writing skills require students to use their sources for much more than quotations. This workshop will provide students with strategies for combining and blending information from sources to create and deliver more strikingly distinctive and original college essays.

  • A typical Google search produces millions of results from many different sources. Besides just looking at domain names, how do you know if information found online is reliable or creditable? Is doing a Google search the same as using the Library Database? Come to this workshop to learn how to find creditable and reliable information online for academic research!

  • Ever wonder why your brilliant essay got a "B" instead of an "A"? Or how about why your science teacher loves your writing but your humanities teacher doesn't? Here's your chance to find out! Join us for a discussion with faculty from a variety of disciplines who will tell you insider secrets for getting a good grade on your written work in any class.

Packing a Punch: Developing Well-Supported Body Paragraphs
  • Do you ever have trouble making sure your main ideas come across clearly and convincingly? This workshop will explore how to thoroughly develop the body paragraphs in an essay. We will focus on developing ideas with specific details as well as integrating and balancing examples with explanations in support of topic sentences.

  • Comma-challenged? Stumped by semicolons? Problems with possessives? This workshop will teach you a few simple rules that will eliminate 90% of your punctuation issues! Improve your grades, increase the clarity of your writing, and impress your teachers by learning how to punctuate appropriately.

  • See, hear, touch, taste, and smell your way to stronger writing. In this workshop, you will learn practical skills to help refine the complex process of bringing imaginative writing and academic assignments to life with the power of image-driven language.

  • It can be hard to talk about revising sentences without understanding the parts that make up a whole sentence or the role each part plays. Come to this workshop to master parts of speech and develop your sentence writing skills, whether it's new to you or you're looking for a refresher. This workshop is part one of a two part series on sentences; we encourage you to also attend "Sentences II: Fixing Fragments" for the most benefit.

  • How do you solve a problem like sentence fragments? This workshop will focus on identifying what components are missing from a fragment to learn how to fix it! This workshop is part two of a two part series on sentences; we encourage you to also attend "Sentences I: Parts of Speech in Complete Sentences" for the most benefit.

    • Do you put off writing until the last possible minute? Are work, friends, Facebook, other homework, even household chores excuses not to work on a paper?  If so, this workshop is for you!  Learn to make writing less of a hassle and more enjoyable by managing your time efficiently and effectively throughout the writing process.  Plus, discover ways to motivate yourself to actually want to write!

    Worry-Free Writing
    • This workshop will make writing easier and more fun by showing you how to get rid of the worry or fear that often comes with big writing assignments. You’ll also learn how to write better papers by turning negative emotions into positive energy.
