“Some writers confuse authenticity, which they ought always to aim at, with originality, which they should never bother about.”
--W.H. Auden
The Creative Writing Program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College offers students opportunities to study the process and production of original, imaginative works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction with award-winning writers in a variety of workshop courses, where students read and discuss poems, stories, and essays written by their classmates in a critical and supportive artistic academic setting.
Chandler-Gilbert’s Creative Writing Program also offers the Maricopa County Community College District’s Academic Certificate in Creative Writing, a unique and innovative opportunity for those interested in pursuing a course of study in creative writing in a vibrant community of nationally renowned authors of fiction, poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting. Instruction includes both traditional and online classes, workshops, and conferences that are accessible to writers of all levels regardless of academic or professional standing. For more information, including application guidelines, click on the “MCCCD Creative Writing Certificate” link on the left side of the page.
Students can also join a larger community of writers and artists by participating in the CGCC Creative Writing Club, which cultivates an encouraging student community of poets, writers, playwrights, screenwriters, and performance artists. Club activities include attending public poetry and fiction readings at local bookstores, colleges, and universities, as well as campus-sponsored dramatic performances and readings by nationally renowned authors. Club members also have the opportunity to produce and edit CGCC’s biannual online student literary journal, The Gila River Review.
