Enrique's Journey Assignments and Curriculum
Pre-Reading Assignments, developed by Amy Woodbeck, CGCC Reading Instructor

Prologue Assignment. This assignment is a great model for many reading skills you may want to have your students work on. It details highlighting specific characteristics of two characters. It asks students working in small groups to take on the following roles: leading the discussion, reviewing key passages, connecting ideas, and illustrating the reading. Use all or parts of this as ways to get your students to read for a purpose and demonstrate their comprehension.

Researching and reading current newspaper articles: issues, perspectives, and opinions. Rubric for newspaper research assignment.

Immigration debate comparison grid. This assignment helps students organize ideas about specific issues related to immigration. “Based on the information you have gathered and the discussions with your workgroup and whole class, identify at least three (3) issues and make thoughtful entries on this comparison grid.”

Interview Guide for Interviewing a Person who immigrated to the United States, This engaging and creative assignment directs students to interview someone who has immigrated to the United States and includes a map and research assignment, culminating in the production of a poem, music, or other original artwork to illustrate what was learned. Causes and Effects in Enrique’s Journeys. General Graphic Organizer and Specific Graphic Organizer for the mothers who leave their children behind in their native country, the children who are left behind, the rest of the family the economy of the native country, the economy of the United States, and any additional effects

Character Comparison graphic organizer. Main and Secondary Character. Enrique and Maria Isabel.

Compare and Contrast essay about images of US on TV versus reality of experience in US for Enrique and Lourdes.

Essay summarizing Enrique’s early attempts to get into the United States including reasons for his failures.

Descriptive Essay of Chiapas.

Timeline for journey from Honduras to Northern border of Mexico and the US. Semantic Features Analysis for timeline: chart with columns to capture different forces that affected Enrique and other migrants’ experiences.

Analyzing Don Bartletti’s photographs, which chronicle Enrique and other immigrants’ journeys to the US. This assignment helps students analyze visual texts using OPTIC. OPTIC stands for Overview, Parts, Title, Interrelationship, and Conclusion. Bartletti's images: 1of5, 2of5, 3of5, 4of5, 5of5.

Social Barometer and Four-Corners Assignment. This assignment asks students to react to a statement read to the class by standing either in their place in a continuum from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree or in one for four corners (Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree) and talk about their positions. The assignment sheet gives great advice for leading the discussion. It also helps you develop statements that will get to discussions involving critical thinking on the topic of immigration and/or Enrique’s Journey.

Persuasive Map. This assignment is based on previous work including the social barometer and four corners assignment.
