"THEM: Images of Separation," is a traveling exhibition that showcases items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups. The negative imagery -- found on postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs and costumes -- promoted stereotyping against such groups as Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and poor whites, as well as those who are "other" in terms of body type or sexual orientation.

From February 3 to February 28, the exhibit will be on display in Chandler-Gilbert Community College's library gallery on the Pecos Campus. Accompanying the images will be didactic panels.

Here is a document that shows the images and the didactic panels that will be part of the exhibit.

View the images in the exhibit without the accompanying didactic panels online at http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/traveling2/THEM/

Docent Resources:

Please provide Docent Feedback after every tour that you give

Tours of the Exhibit
Student docents will be available for guided showings of the exhibit. The students will receive training about the exhibit and how to be a docent. To see a schedule of docent-guided tours and to request a docent-guided tour, please go to Scheduling Tours of the THEM exhibit.

If you are going to bring your class to the exhibit and lead a tour yourself, it makes sense to coordinate this so that not more than one tour is happening at a time. To help do this please go to Scheduling Tours of the THEM exhibit.

Here are useful resources:
Here is a selective list of reference sources, books, films, web sites, and more related to issues addressed in the exhibit THEM. This list has been provided by CGCC's library.

Online Resources

Faculty and staff who work with students with the exhibit participated in a "Them & Us: Positive Ways to Approach Difference" workshop which gave participants ideas of how to think and talk, and ask questions about difference, and will help prepare faculty who may teach the exhibit “THEM: Images of Separation.”

On Wednesday, February 3, in the library from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm there was an opening for the exhibit featuring Dr. Matthew Whitaker. His presentation is entitled "Race Relations and Interracial Unity in America: An Open House Keynote for the Them Exhibit." More than 200 people attended this.
