FAQ's About Advisory Councils

What is a Career & Technical Education Advisory Council?

A Career & Technical Education Advisory Council is a group designed to link the occupational/CTE programs to the business community.

The purpose of the council is to promote constructive and necessary change within an occupational program and to insure that instruction is consistent with the skills practiced by productive employees of local businesses and industries.

The advisory councils are critical.

Advisory councils are an efficient and effective way for CTE programs to meet the needs of local employers.

The councils enable businesses to directly influence the educational process to insure that the programs reflect the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed in the workforce.

How does this benefit members' businesses?

Serving on an advisory council will benefit your business by providing you with:

  •   The opportunity to influence the quality of training of future and current employees.
  •   Direct access to skilled potential employees.
  •  A setting for developing relationships with managers of related firms and organizations
  •   Personal and company recognition
The availability of a quality workforce determines the productivity and profitability of Arizona-based firms. Advisory councils for Career and Technical Education help facilitate change within the occupational programs in order to meet the needs of a changing workforce.

What will members be asked to do?

Advisory councils meet one to two times per year. Meetings tend to be from one to three hours in length. More meetings may be necessary if major course and program revisions are under consideration.

Advisory council members provide advice. It is the role of the faculty and staff of the college to interpret that advice in a way that best promotes learning and meets student needs in the program.

Council members may be asked to:

  • Establish work requirements and competencies
  • Recommend equipment purchases/donations
  • Identify new technologies
  • Assist with internship and job placements
  • Project labor market demand
  • Identify potential faculty
  • Advocate the program
  • Recommend additional advisory council members

The most important service that advisory council members provide is their advice to faculty.
