What is a MCDBA?
A Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) is a professional who has the knowledge and skills to design, implement and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases. This is an industry certification from Microsoft, and is earned when an individual passes the required certification exams from Microsoft. The courses in the Microsoft Database Administration program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College prepare students for certification.

What Microsoft Database Administration programs are available at CGCC?

Chandler-Gilbert offers a Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Microsoft Database Administration. This CCL can be used in the Information Technology AAS.

What classes do I need to become an industry-certified MCDBA?

Certification is done by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft certification depends on successful completion of Microsoft certification exams, not on completion of the courses at CGCC, although successful completion of the courses helps to prepare you for the industry exams. Information about the current certification requirements can be found at Microsoft. It is always a good idea to check the Microsoft site often, as it will give you information related to current certification requirements, and expected changes. Each of the certification exams has a cost, usually over $100 per attempt. Exams must be taken at an authorized testing center.

How long will it take me to finish the courses need for a MCDBA certification?

You will need to complete all five courses in the Microsoft Database Administration Certification of Completion. The majority of Microsoft classes meet for approximately 3- 4 hours per week for 16 weeks, the length of our usual semester. Some classes may be offered in a 6 - 8 week format or a distance learning format but require students to complete more or all work outside of class. At the rate of two classes per semester, the entire sequence would take 3 semesters or 1.5 years to complete. To complete in this time frame, a student could take MST150 and MST152 in the first semester, and MST155 and MST244 the second semester and MST254 the third semester. However, please be aware that not all classes are offered each semester.

What are the prerequisites and what other courses should I take to be successful?

There are no prerequisites to start the MST150 course. For students who are new to computers and the field of information technology, it is recommended that students complete CIS105 (Survey of Computer Information Systems) and CNT140 (Cisco Networking Basics). Taking these courses will greatly increase the chances of success. Also, before taking MST244 or MST254, it is recommended that students take CIS199DO (Introduction to SQL). These decisions should be made by the student with input from the advisor and with consideration given to many factors. We want our students to be successful and get the most out of all of our courses.

What is the cost for the program?

The cost of each class is based on the usual tuition cost for the student. There may be additional course fees for these classes in the range of $25 - $35 . The cost for books is separate, and can range from about $50 - $150 per class. Books may be purchased at the campus book store.

Can I get a degree with these classes?

YES! The Microsoft Database Administration CCL can be applied to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Information Technology offered at Chandler-Gilbert. The IT AAS degree also includes other classes in the Information Technology area to help students develop knowledge and skills in many computer areas. A certificate or degree completed at CGCC can enhance your marketability within the computer field. The AAS in Information Technology currently transfers to Arizona State University Polytechnic into the Bachelor of Applied Science. Please discuss with an advisor to determine which BAS is right for you!

How do I sign up for these classes?

We recommend that you speak with an advisor before registering for these classes. New student enrollment information can be found at the enrollment page. A student new to Chandler-Gilbert Community College will need to fill out a Student Information Form at www.my.maricopa.edu or in person. CGCC Advisors welcome the opportunity to speak with you and help you find the appropriate course and program to fit your needs. If you would like more information please call Advisement at 480- 732- 7317.
