Honors Forum: Dr. Linell Cady-- "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"

Linell Cady is the founding Director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict and Dean's Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University. Her research and teaching focus on modern western religious though and the interrelations of religion, politics and public life, with primary attention the American context. She is the author of Religion, Theology and American Public Life and numerous essays on issues of feminist theology, the interrelations of religion and secularism; and thinkers as Kierkegaard, Royce, James, Dewey, and H.R. Niebuhr. She has been awarded major grants from the Ford Foundation and the Henry Luce Foundation to direct large collaborative projects on the politics of secularism and the interrelations of gender, human rights, and religion. She has coedited several volumes including Comparative Secularisms in a Global Age, Religious Studies, Theology and the University: Conflicting Maps and Changing Terrain, Religion and Conflict in South and Southeast Asia: Disrupting Violence and the forthcoming Religion, the Secular and the Politics of Sexual Difference. She received her B.A. from Newton College and her M.T.S. and Th.D. from Harvard University, and taught for a couple of years at St. Mary's College, Norte Dame, Indiana. At ASU, she has also served as chair of the Department of Religious Studies and associate and interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She is currently working on a monograph titled Religious Imagination in a Late Secular Age.
