Gila River Review

Hearts, Judy Wood

David Wood

The Dance

You asked my best friend
to the dance,
and I was happy for him.
Really, I was.

He was happy, too.
I could tell from the way
he talked about you;
your hair, your laugh,
the way you walked,
the music in your voice.

Every time he smiled.
I knew he was thinking
of you.
How could he not be?
I knew that smile
as if it were my own.

When he asked my advice
on what flowers to bring
I gladly offered
to place the order myself.
I spent the afternoon
searching
until I found
the blue orchids
I knew would match
the sparkle in your eyes.

The day came at last
and I persuaded him
that I should drive you
both.
He agreed at last
when I told him
that I could borrow
my dad's Town Car.
He even said
that I was a good friend.

So I drove you
to the dance
and opened your car door.
He took your hand
and gave you my flowers.
The look you gave him
stopped my heart.

I watched you walk together,
down a path of paper-mache hearts,
until the gym doors closed
behind you.

I sat in the car
alone
and promised
that I would wait
for your return.

As the son of an Evangelist, David Wood grew up traveling the country. This gave him a varied education but little time to make any lasting friendships. It was during high school that he finally made his way to the Arizona desert where he was to find the love of his life. An avid reader, artist, musician, astronomer, and martial artist, he still finds his greatest joy simply spending time with his family. David penned his first book in third grade and has been writing ever since.

Judy Wood is an artist and poet residing in Mesa.  Judy has attended Mesa Community College, Arizona State University, and University of Phoenix.  Judy's artwork can be seen at various locations around the valley, including The Angel Store on 5th Avenue in Scottsdale, Evermore Nevermore ,and SunDust Gallery in Mesa.  She enjoys drawing, painting, writing, and spending time with her family.
