LMS Online Student Tutorials

NOTE: most courses will NOT be visible until first day of classes.

  • Experienced eLearning students familiar with all the topics below can skip the tutorials, but your instructor will expect you to start class understanding how to navigate the LMS.

  • Complete the appropriate tutorials before your class begins.
Log in to CANVAS

CANVAS Tutorial 1: Navigation Basics

Watch video: Tutorial 1: Navigation (7 min 14 sec)

Gives an overview of the starter page (dashboard) in CANVAS, some tips, and a very brief peek of menu choices for a specific course.

How do I login to CANVAS?

CANVAS Tutorial 2: Setting Preferences

Watch
video: Tutorial 2: Setting Preferences (4min 10 sec)

Set forwarding to another email address (for example, for your phone or tablet).  Upload a small picture of yourself.  Control how much, and what kind of course-related notifications show up in your email – from alerts that due dates have changed for an assignment, to notification that your hw/exam/paper has been graded.

What’s the most common set of preferences for an average student?

CANVAS Tutorial 3: Syllabus & Announcements

Watch video: Tutorial 3: Syllabus and Announcements (4min 42 sec)

The syllabus contains the description and policies of the course. You are responsible for understanding the instructor's detailed course plan and explanation of what is mandatory and expected in order to succeed.

If a course has specific eLearning requirements (use SKYPE for oral tests, email instead of submit assignments, etc) these will be listed in the syllabus and you must meet them.

Announcements are MUST READ/READ NOW postings that show up every few days, from the instructor.  Examples include reminders, tips for assignments, special due dates, warnings about downtime, etc.
You should download and carefully read the syllabus first day of classes.

You should read for Announcements and check Calendar every time you log in -- at least every few days.

Do I take exams online or do I have to come on campus for them?

CANVAS Tutorial 4: Modules and Assignments

Watch video: Tutorial 4: Modules and Assignments   (9min 29 sec)

Most courses are organized into Modules -- weekly, by unit, or by goals. You click through modules to get access to readings, goals, assignments, and other required work. Modules, combined with Announcements,  list/contain all the reading, goals, work you need to do for the course.
NOTE: If your course is face-to-face or hybrid, and uses CANVAS only for support (holding files, handouts, notes, etc), your instructor may use PAGES instead of modules to hold content.

Assignments is a quick link to work requiring submission or grading, such as HW, quizzes, essay, pre-tests, etc.  Usually you do assignments AFTER reading and meeting course goals in the weekly or unit module.

What happens if I submit at 11:59pm on the due date and the internet connection sends it after midnight?

CANVAS Tutorial 5: Discussions

A tutorial for Discussions is under development.
Watch the Mesa Community College video: Discussions

Many courses require student-to-student interaction and/or group work or group discussions. In Discussions, you can reply to an instructor or students' comments and see the replies of others, or you can start a new thread/or message.  If you have ever used facebook or other social sharing media, the post-and-comment experience is similar.  The syllabus will detail if, how, Discussions will be used in your class.

Will I get in trouble if I posted content that is controversial or may be offensive to some?

CANVAS Tutorial 6: Quizzes & Grades
A tutorial is not currently available for quizzes or Grades, but you may want to examine the quizzes tutorial and the Grades tutorial from Mesa Community College.

Do I have to go to a proctored site for quizzes, or just for tests?
