Tips for Using Online Job Sites

The Job Search
  • Some sites allow applicants to post their resume to be viewed by prospective employers. This is a great service because it allows employers to recruit you for jobs that you haven't applied for-making your job search easier! (Make sure they offer confidential posting for your resume if you don't want your current employer to know you are looking for a job!)

  • Register with a handful of sites. This will give you access to more employers and opportunities. Try to look for sites that post jobs similar to the ones you would apply for.
  • Most databases will allow you to search by job category, location, keyword, permanent vs. temporary, part-time vs. full-time, etc. Some seekers start with a very narrow search and expand their options as necessary, while others prefer to conduct a very broad search and scroll through a lot of listings.
  • Make sure you research the company before applying for a job. This should help you in writing a resume and cover letter that is more tailored to their company.
  • Get someone to proofread your resume and cover letter before you start sending it out. Make sure you use spell and grammar check!
  • Even though you are applying for jobs electronically, still use the "old" rules by sending a professional cover letter with your resume. The cover letter should be in the text of the e-mail and should address what job you are applying for, as well as, what skills and experience you have to qualify for the job.
  • After viewing a job posted online, you can often apply in two ways: e-mail, or online application. Read the company's directions on how they want you to apply. If you apply in another format, they may not consider you!

Online Applications

  • If employers have an online application, they usually prefer that you apply for this position in this way. Online applications put your information into a company database that the employer can search whenever openings become available.
  • When using an online application. It is important to use keywords and phrases. Applicants should be specific when listing their experience and skills. You can often cut and paste your resume directly into the application form.

Email Resumes

  • Try not to send a resume as an attachment unless specifically asked to do so (they are often jumbled when you don't have the same system as the employer). Additionally, it is a way to try to avoid viruses that may be present in a file such as Microsoft Word. Instead, copy and paste the text information into an email message as ASCII text, which is the most web-friendly resume.

Creating ASCII Text Resume (Email Resume)
ASCII resume (pronounced askee) is a text only resume. To create an ASCII file, you can start with your visual resume, and then save as a "text only" file or a "Rich Text Format" file. When you do this, the formatting will be lost, and you will need to change your resume accordingly.

  • The document will be left justified; tabs and word wrap will be ineffective-use the space bar and make hard returns to ensure you words are not cut off between lines.
  • Any bullets will appear as question marks-not a good thing if you are bulleting your skills! Get rid of the bullets before saving.
  • Any bolded, underlined or italicized words will no longer appear that way in your text only document.
  • The font will be changed.
  • Additions to your text only file will not have the benefit of spell check-proofread before you save as a text only file.
  • When your ASCII resume is complete you need to cut and paste it directly into the body of the e-mail.

Keywords
Provide keywords that go beyond the job title such as "secretary." For any position, you will want to include your related skills, software knowledge, and equipment experience. Include terms that describe environment-"casual" or "formal," also offer personal qualifications-"creative, self starter."

  • If using a keyword summary on a resume-place it near the top. Keyword search engines usually search the first 50-100 words on a resume.

Maximize the number of hits:

  • Have a key word section in your resume after your objective. Your key word section should include all the industry buzz words that apply.
  • Use nouns not verbs. A visual resume focuses on verbs and adverbs.
  • Make sure you list your certifications by spelling out the words as well as using the acronym.
  • Repeat your key words within your skills section and in your work history.
  • If there is more than one way to describe something, put it down: call center, help desk, support center.
